If I Knew You

If I knew you, and you knew me,
And both of us could clearly see,
I’m sure that we would differ less,
And clasp our hands in friendliness ‘
If I knew you, and you knew me.

In men whom men pronounce as ill,
I find so much of goodness still;
In men whom men pronounce divine,
I find so much of sin and blot;
I hesitate to draw the line
Between the two, when God has not.
